Old Town Gateway Sign – San Diego, CA

8 Years, One Vision: Turning a Community’s Dream Into a Landmark

The Challenge

Back in 2017, the Old Town Chamber of Commerce had a vision: A grand, gateway sign that would welcome people into San Diego’s most historic neighborhood – something bold, timeless, and worthy of becoming a landmark in itself.

But what started as an ambitious idea quickly ran into real-world roadblocks:

  • The design had to honor the area’s rich history
  • The location had major construction restrictions
  • The permitting process dragged on for six years

They needed a partner who could not only bring the vision to life – but stick with it through the long haul.

Strategy & Design

From the very first meeting, the goal was clear: this sign had to be special.

Together with the Chamber, we explored every option – from adobe textures that matched Old Town’s original architecture, to intricate lighting, to curved metalwork that felt like it belonged in another era.

Our design team sketched, revised, and collaborated until the entire board was aligned. When the permits finally came through, we were ready to build something that looked like it had always been there.

Building It Right

The site was tricky – sitting just above the water table. We couldn’t dig too deep, or risk flooding, so we engineered custom footings that would anchor the massive archway safely, without disturbing the underground water flow.

Then came the structure itself.

Curved steel sections, precisely shaped to create the graceful arch. Scrollwork details, laser-cut for a handcrafted feel. Color-changing lights, built into the base, programmed to glow differently for every season or holiday.

More than just fabrication, this was about bringing an idea to life with the precision and beauty that would strengthen the sense of community in San Diego.

The Install

Once everything was prepped, our team brought the sign to the site in sections and began the final install.

We blocked off the two-lane road, lowered the supports into place, and slowly lifted the arch – spanning 60 feet across – into the air.

Neighbors watched. News crews rolled tape. After 8 years of talk, the gateway to Old Town was finally real.

Outcome & Impact

Today, the sign has become a core part of the neighborhood – showing up in photos, city tours, even travel blogs.

And for the people who live and work in Old Town, it’s a daily reminder of what’s possible when vision meets follow-through.

  • A true landmark for Old Town, recognized by local news and community members
  • Built to stand for decades (not just years), resisting environmental wear
  • A project that checks every box: design vision, structural integrity, lighting flexibility, historical context
  • Proof that Integrated Signs can handle the tough, the creative, and the technical — for projects that matter
